Therapy can be offered on an individual or a group basis. Although it is recognised that the individual format of therapy is the most effective way to treat psychological distress, it is not always available due to the “labour intensive” nature of individual therapy.
The fees for private consultations may either be paid by an individual, a health insurer or a third party, such as a solicitor (if written authorisation has been received). It is usually recommended that a patient obtains a referral to see a specialist from their general practitioner. However, this is not necessary if you do not wish your GP to be involved.
Individual Therapy
The therapist and patient work together (collaboratively) to identify and resolve
problems. Inter-
The number of sessions required depends on the problem being treated and the patient’s needs; each session usually lasts for 50 minutes.
Sessions are traditionally held on a weekly basis but may be varied according to the patient’s needs and may be conducted either in person or via telephone contact.
Fees for individual therapy is £75 + VAT per 50 minute session or multiples thereof, which may be recoverable under medical insurance plans if a referral is first gained from your general practitioner.
Individual, Manual led, Therapy
I am now offering a “distance” form of therapy which involves one 35 minute session per month face to face contact and weekly telephone contact of approximately 15 minutes duration.
The telephone contact will be arranged to be at a mutually convenient time each week.
The work involved is similar to the work undertaken as part of Group Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and would be utilising a treatment manual but would be fully tailored to the needs of the individual. The course of therapy follows a number of goals to be completed or achieved on a weekly basis. These will be made explicit during the 35 minute face to face meeting and the progress made or problems encountered will discussed during the course of the 15 minute weekly phone conversations.
As with Individual Therapy the number of sessions required depends on the problem being treated and the patient’s needs
Fees for Individual, Manual led, therapy is £100 + VAT per month.
The Group format was developed to aid the dissemination of useful psychological input to those in need returning following the Great War, WW2, Vietnam etc. and advantages include cost effectiveness, increased access to psychological input and decreased feelings of isolation (“Have you ever seen anything like this before”, “I’ll bet that you’ve never come across anyone as mad as me before” and “You must think I’m mad” being very common question or quotes from those seeking treatment) and the use of the other group members experiences as a resource for therapy.
Disadvantages include the dilution of the therapeutic input and the fact the group
leader (or facilitator) does not offer therapy per se but psycho-
Groups ideally range between 6 – 12 members and run over a pre determined number of sessions (depending on the nature of the problem). Each session lasts for 1 hour and 30 minutes and is held on a weekly basis.
As with individual therapy, the emphasis is on the completion of intersessional tasks.
Subject to the recruitment of suitable group members, the following groups are currently available:
